Fish & tackle shops in Betty's Bay

If you’re looking for a picturesque seaside village experience then the Western Cape’s Overberg region has a number of attractions alongside its scenic coastline. One of the most quaint and untouched of these towns is the settlement of Betty’s Bay. It’s located on the R44 and is less than an hour and a half’s drive from the Cape Town International Airport. Nestled between the Kogelberg Mountain Range and the magnificent Atlantic Ocean, Betty’s Bay is bordered by fresh water lakes, the ocean and the Palmiet River. This makes it one of the best places to stay if you want to enjoy a variety of fishing adventures in this part of South Africa.

To make it even easier there are businesses in and around Betty’s Bay that offer fish and tackle products to amateur and professional anglers alike. There are several spots along this coastline and even inland that offer rock and surf fishing opportunities. The most common fish you’ll find in the Overstrand area is Steenbras which are prolific throughout the year. You’ll also find a lot of Kabeljou (Kob) in the summer months (usually November through to February). Stop in at local fish and tackle shops in Betty’s Bay and ask locals about the best bait to use and where the preferred spots are along the shoreline.

There are numerous diving opportunities in this part of the Western Cape and with the right permits you can catch some of the freshest and most delicious seafood. The restrictions apply (with various closed seasons on certain species) but you can apply to legally harvest a sea basket of oysters, mussels and even rock lobster or octopus at the right time of year. These delicacies are only caught during the limited, strictly monitored periods for various conservation reasons that ensure future generations can also enjoy the sport of fishing off this coastline for delicious seafood feasts.

Betty’s Bay offers access to some of the best fishing and seawater activities possible including kayak fishing, rock and surf angling, spear fishing and even diving. However, this part of the world is also considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom with an exceptional array of fynbos that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Hiking and biking in this part of the country is a true treat for any outdoor enthusiast, a good option for when the fish aren’t biting and you want to explore. Visit Betty’s Bay on your next getaway and stop in at fish and tackle businesses for the right gear and info.
