Cape Agulhas Lighthouse

Commissioned on the 1st of March 1849, the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was the third lighthouse to be built on the South African coastline. If you love lighthouses this one at the Southernmost tip of the African Continent is one not to be missed. Climb to the very top and enjoy panoramic views of both the Indian and the Atlantic Oceans

The lighthouse was declared a National Monument in 1973 and is located within the Agulhas National Park.

Ocean Activities

Cape Agulhas has a magnificent coastline that consists of both rocky and sandy beaches and the waters of the Agulhas Bank off the coast, are home to an abundance of sea life.

Fishing:

The area offer some of the best fishing conditions in South Africa, offering boat-based fishermen a bounty of opportunities. Regular fishing trips run from Struisbaai Harbour daily and are aimed at fishing enthusiasts of all ages and levels of experience.

Ocean Sports:

The waters of the Atlantic and Indian oceans are a watersports haven perfect for Kayaking, kitesurfing and surfing.

Whale Watching:

The fertile waters off the Agulhas Coastline are a popular gathering spot for Southern Right Whales in the months between June and December. Intimate whale watching trips with minimal passengers run from the Struisbaai Harbour during whale season (weather permitting).

Agulhas National Park hosts the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative whose aim it is to address the main threats to the fynbos biodiversity of the Agulhas Plain.

Other than enjoying hikes on one of the many trails, you could visit the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse and see the point where the Indian and Atlantic Ocean meet at Africa’s southernmost point.

De Hoop Nature Reserve

De Hoop Nature Reserve is a nature reserve near Cape Agulhas at the southern tip of Africa.

Approximately 340 square kilometres in area, it is one of the largest natural areas managed by CapeNature. The reserve allows for day trips as well as lengthier stays at the De Hoop Collection that offers a range of accommodation styles to suit all tastes and budgets.

De Hoop Nature Reserve has an abundance of wildlife and if the perfect spot from where to watch the Southern Right Whale in season..

Cape Agulhas Wine Route

The Cape Agulhas Wine Route is something of a phenomenon as its unique terroir and award-winning wines have caused much excitement in the wine community. Formerly known as the Elim Wine Route, the Cape Agulhas Wine Route winds its way from Baardskeerdersbos across an area that includes the greater Napier region. The routes cool strong southwesterly and southeasterly winds provide a very cool ripening season, perfect for the viticulture of most wines.

While some wine farms open daily to the public, visits to others are by prior arrangement so be sure to call ahead to confirm details.

Many of the wine farms in the Cape Agulhas Wine Route offer added conveniences such as restaurants that showcase the local cuisine.

The Cape Agulhas Wine Route includes the smaller Agulhas Wine Triangle which is an area made up of wine farms that only use grapes grown locally.
