What a season! Our 70km Marine Protected Area gets around 40% of the world's Southern Right Whale population, visit yearly. And right now is the best time to see these magnificent mammals from the shores of Koppie Alleen.
In the first aerial count, which was done early August by the Mammal Research Institute Whale Unit and Jean Tresfon, a total of 309 whales were counted at De Hoop. That was 150 cow/calf pairs and 9 unaccompanied adults!
De Hoop Nature Reserve is undoubtedly the best place for land-based whale watching.
