Spring is one of the best times to visit De Hoop Nature Reserve as it’s the perfect time to spend the day overlooking the ocean, whales possibly in the background and endangered coastal fynbos in bloom. De Hoop Nature Reserve is just 3 hours from Cape Town, in the Overberg district, close to Hermanus. The neighbouring marine reserve, which extends 5km out to sea, is the largest marine protected area in Africa. No wonder this reserve is the perfect place for whale watching, seeing the rare Cape Vulture colony, flamingos and even penguins.
For the two nights you will stay at De Hoop’s beautiful self-catering cottages with like minded guests, Here, you can kick back and relax and if you are not so keen to make food yourself, you can pop over to their well known restaurant called The Fig Tree, for some gourmet meals and a glass of wine.
