An Expression Of Emotion

Gansbaai artist, Rouvé de Flamingh’s oil paintings are abstract works painted in rich, vibrant and textured colours, which she conveys onto canvas using brushes, oil bars and palette knives. These artworks are a process that unfolds as the art is created, with no clear plan upfront, and pieces are only titled upon completion. One constant is the generous use of colour and texture, which evolves according to her mood. Rouvé loves how open-ended abstract art is. This freedom allows the meaning and feeling behind an artwork to be in the eye of the beholder. Rouvés paintings are sold at art exhibitions and on her website. Private viewings can be arranged at Rouvé’s studio by appointment.

About

About

“I would like to think that the images that appear in my work, convey an emotional expression rather than a realistic reproduction of what I see. It is therefore obvious that my paintings are once-offs and cannot be repeated or commissioned. My creations are not the result of a cognitive process, but come from my soul.”

After school, Rouvé qualified and practised as an Occupational Therapist. For a while, motherhood then became a full-time occupation. Once her sons became more independent, she enrolled for a BA in Fine Art at Unisa, specialising in painting. She now practices as a full-time painter.

Rouvé paints mostly in her private art studio at home in De Kelders. Her studio has a panoramic view of Walker Bay’s ocean and mountainscapes. This tranquil sanctuary is a calm creative space that resonates with joy. For added inspiration and communication with fellow artists, she is part of an artist’s group based in Onrus, Hermanus.

Rouvé regularly participates in group exhibitions and exhibits on her website’s gallery.

“My inspiration comes from my immediate surroundings, my memories and things that I feel passionate about. My emotional and sensorial experiences however influence the colours on my palette and the brushstrokes I use. My paintings are created without preconceived agendas, thus the end product is usually an unexpected experience.”

Rouvé’s paintings can be viewed at her studio gallery by appointment.
