About

The Baardskeersdersbos Art Route was officially launched in April 2008 and has since become a highlight on Overberg’s events calendar.

The solo exhibitions on the route embrace a wide range of subject matter but the allure of nature and rural scenes predominate each exhibited collection. It is a special treat to meet and listen to the stories of the creators of the various masterpieces

Member Artists

Member Artists

The Baardskeerdersbos Art Route’s member artists have home studios where they exhibit to the public with prior arrangement.

Kali van der Merwe

Kali has a rich creative trajectory as an artist, filmmaker, photographer, sculptor, rogue taxidermist, sound designer, social activist, media-skills trainer, printmaker and most recently a foray into virtual reality animation. Themes in Kali's work delve deeply into life, death, decay and rebirth.

Jan Vingerhoets (ReDeux)

Jan creates elegant heirloom functional art out of consumer-discarded materials to give them a second, and sometimes third, life as a sum of disparate parts. Jan's art is at once a rebellion against the uber-consumerist culture as well as a celebration of the beauty inherent in life-scarred waste.

Niel Jonker

Niel is a sculptor in bronze and other materials, and a landscape artist who paints outdoors in oil.  As a pioneering artisan breadmaker, he hosts a monthly workshop in Baardskeerdersbos.

Eva Gilliam

Eva is a videographer, documentary filmmaker and camerawoman, and has covered humanitarian crises and development in over 30 African countries for the past 20 years. She began working with encaustic painting two years ago under the tutelage of her Montana-based stepmother, American artist Leslie Van Stavern Millar II.  In her recent work in documenting UNICEF's work in maternal and child health in Cameroon, Eva looks at the first 1,000 days of life starting at conception until two years of age.

Lalainya Carpenter

Lalainya researches complex topics and uses gouache, an opaque watercolour, to weave together various elements to evoke an imaginary, energetic representation of the natural world around her.

Nikki Miles

Nikki has always found beauty in the bones and skulls of animals that have perished and been left to the elements, picked clean by insects and bleached white by the sun. She finds them in the veld, on the dusty shelves of second-hand shops or in decor shops and squirrels them away in my studio where she creates a smooth porcelain-like skin for each skull and illustrates the skin with designs inspired by nature.

Pamela Sullivan

Pamela offers a variety of traditional oil paintings and hosts an eclectic mix of artists in her studio. She enjoys exploring light play through paint and is currently fascinated by the colours of white on white - light and shadow. Her subject matter reflects the country lifestyle of living in BBos.
