The Best View On Earth

Coffee on the Rocks is a daytime restaurant and coffee shop in De Kelders just outside Gansbaai. Boasting magnificent views of the ocean, the private home opens its doors to the public each day serving brunch, light meals and delicious blackboard specials made with fresh locally sourced ingredients. Omelettes, tramezzini and burgers share the limelight with home-cooked favourites such as crunchy parmesan chicken, beef rogan josh and traditional Sunday roast. Sweet treats are crafted by chef Gayle, and no visit to Coffee on the Rocks is complete without trying a slice of her lemon meringue pie made with real lemons or chocolate cake baked just the way her grandma used to make it. Walker Bay is known internationally as being the best place on earth to watch the comings and goings of southern right whales during the annual whale season (June to December), and Coffee on the Rocks is the perfect spot to enjoy the show. Coffee on the Rocks is fully licenced, available for small catered functions and has seating for 45 guests (20 inside and 25 outside on the covered deck).

There is no better place than Coffee on the Rocks to have an enchanting meal and watch southern right whales and their calves enjoying themselves in Walker Bay.

Continuing the legacy of her late husband Barry Johnson, Gayle Johnson and her small team of dedicated staff have set out to fill the deserving bellies of local and international guests alike.

Legend has it that Gayle adds a special ingredient to each dish before it leaves her kitchen. Some say she blows a kiss into the pot and whispers “be great”, others say it's saffron.
