Win a Shark cage diving or Whale watching trip for Mandela Day

Win a shark cage diving or whale watching trip!

There's only 3 of us with shoes on the track. The other runners are bare feet, toenails broken, cracked and bleeding feet. We just finished a 3km gravel road run, covered in mud, standing close to each other for warmth shelter against the icy winter cold.

“I asked the girl closest to me,” Why do all of you run bare feet?” With a dull look in her eyes she stuttered, “ We don”t have shoes, not for running or school. I've never had a pair of shoes. Some of us walk 3 hours to get to school in the mornings just to be at running practice in the afternoons”.

Flashbacks of how my hand me down shoes on my feet changed my life a year ago at age 12, popped into my head. Being adopted into a white family as a 13month old baby, life was great, until I started school....I was bullied, teased about my “different colour family” and the way I spoke. Didn’t Global Icon Nelson Mandela, the “father” of our nation sacrificed 67 years of his life for this NOT to happen?! Without any friends or an “I belong feeling”, depression took over. I had no reason to get up in the mornings and suicide started to come to mind more often.

My always supportive family encouraged me to start volunteering at our town”s local underprivileged Day/After-care centre: Cool Kidz. Some of the After Care kids invited me to join them for Cross Country practice. “What?, me getting invited to join?” I never get invited to join! Reluctantly I laced up my pair of hand me down trainers and joined them. Oh boy, how my life had changed since that day, I belonged! Camaradie and never giving up, because there is ALWAYS someone to help you over the finish line, became a reality. It really existed and I was part of it.

I looked at the bare footed girl again, took off my life changing running shoes, asked her to try it on. Yes, you guessed right, they were a perfect fit! She ran off, her eyes never leaving the shoes and 2 months later she was invited to run in the provincial trails. She wasn’t running away from something any more, she was running towards something!

Our runners in the team's lives are not like our nation's Father, Nelson Mandela”s 67 struggling years, it is not a A Long walk to Freedom, it is a long run to Freedom! A pair of running shoes given to me changed my life, that same pair of shoes I gave away, changed another runner”s life.

Not only did Nelson Mandela give 67 years of his live (27 in prison and to the guards dismay, ran every morning at 4am in his small cell at Robben Island :), the 1st black president of SA also loved children. Because of this Global Icon”s sacrifices we have freedom from apartheid and a constitution that teaches us that not only do we have rights, but even as a 13 year old child, I also have a responsibility to help others less fortunate. All Nelson Mandela asked in return for his sacrifices was for ALL to carry on his legacy of paying it forward.

We cant give Tata Madiba a hug on his CENTENARY birthday this year to say thank you for his example, but Cool Kidz can say Happy Birthday Dear Madiba on International Mandela Day 2018 with a “race of a difference”. We want to give a 1000 pairs of running shoes to underprivileged bare feet young runners in our province. All runners who never owned a pair of shoes before ever. Can you image their joy? We have partnered with running clubs in our Province who will help us ensure that each pair of our 1000 shoes goes to a bare feet runner.

This will be the most difficult “race” of our lives and we need your club members, our brother-/Sisterhood of runners to please help us over the finish line this time. THIS IS ONE RACE WE CANT DO ALONE, WE PLEASE NEED YOUR HELP. Would you please encourage your club members to give a gift of £30 / $30 or €30 today in helping us reach our goal of 1000 pairs of running shoes by 16 July 2018.

Just pause for a second to think what running means to you, what would your life be like without running?..... The sense of belonging, it could be a total stranger that you meet, but when you find out its a runner, you “get” them, ITS THAT INSTANT CONNECTION! Cross country runners are almost always covered in mud, but we laugh and always approach every run as a team. We have camaraderie and team spirit and that's worth celebrating! Cross Country runners worldwide will know exactly what I am talking about. To show that we as runners are a united tribe we need ONLY 1000 runners out of millions of runners to please each give a £30 / $30 or €30 gift to get us over the finish line in this race.

All gift givers will receive a high resolution jpg image pencil sketch of Global Icon Nelson Mandela done by an award winning South African Artist as a Thank you for helping us closer to our goal.

Your £30 / $30 or €30 gift might not let you meet a running bare foot child face to face, but you will meet foot to foot, heart to heart and put a smile on a fellow runner”s face, you will embrace us as part of your team. We started hitting the ground running on 18 June 2018 to reach our goal of a 1000 smiling faces with happy feet by 16 July 2018 to celebrate and make a difference on International Madela Day. SINCE STARTING OUR RACE A VERY GENEROUS RUNNER COMMITTED TO SPONSORING AN ADDITIONAL 100 PAIRS OF SHOES IF WE REACH OUR GOAL OF A 1000 PAIRS OF SHOES BY 6 July 2018. A challenge in our race :)! And a lucky giver will also win a shark cage diving and whale watching trip, generously sponsored by another goodhearted caring soul.

Please say that we can count on you and your club members to give a gift of £30 / $30 or €30 today and help us over this finish line. Together we can celebrate Nelson Mandela”s Centenary birthday and empower kids by giving them a chance to “lace em up” and never stop running towards their dreams.
