About

About

Farm 215 - Nature Retreat & Fynbos Reserve is one of the pioneers in sustainable hospitality in South Africa.

The guesthouse infrastructure has been designed to be compatible with the surrounding nature while working toward the conservation of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Guesthouse operations are done in accordance with strict “green” guidelines that include the use of solar energy, water recycling, the use of biodegradable products and land and fire management, and rehabilitation.

Water is sourced from the mountain catchment in the reserve. Surplus water is routed back into the stream and wetland after being routed through sandbanks. There is zero downstream effect as a result of the water-use in the guesthouse. No chemicals are used for the filtration of the water and it maintains its golden-brown colour, typical of fynbos catchment areas when it comes out of the tap.

Reforestation Trees For Tourism

Farm 215 is the first reforestation site program of the South African Forest Trust.  An area, cleared from alien invasive vegetation has been re-forested with indigenous tree species. To date, 14,000 trees have been planted in the reserve.

Accommodation

Accommodation

Farm 215 - Nature Retreat & Fynbos Reserve offers three spacious Fynbos Suites and three Homestead Rooms.  in the old farmhouse and three freestanding that are spaced out along a meandering path that is surrounded by pristine vegetation.

All rooms and suites have en suite bathrooms with bath and separate shower, lounge chairs, a writing desk, covered deck or balcony, and a woodstove. And all of them have sweeping views over an undisturbed landscape. There is no television, neither in the rooms nor in any of the lounges. Farm 215 is not a place for televisions. There is, however, a large book-collection on many subjects, but with a certain bias to nature and conservation.

Fynbos Suites

The Fynbos Suites are freestanding suites that offer total privacy. They have uninterrupted views of the unspoilt Agulhas Plains. Each suite is powered by its own solar panels cum invertor. Three big glass sliding doors open up to the covered wooden deck stretched out over the whole front of each suite that has an open-plan lounge, bedroom and bathroom. The shower and toilet are separate.

 Homestead Rooms

The Homestead Rooms consist of two guest-rooms on the first floor of the homestead and one on the ground floor. The upstairs rooms each have a private balcony and the downstairs room has a covered terrace and a private garden.

Each room has modern elements and they have a more traditional feel than the Fynbos Suites.

The Fynbos Reserve

The Fynbos Reserve

Farm 215 - Nature Retreat & Fynbos Reserve can be found at the foot of Fynbos covered mountains in the middle of a pristine 800-hectare, private nature reserve with undisturbed views over the Agulhas Plains towards the ocean. The reserve is a Protected Area and a sanctuary for hundreds of rare, endemic and common fynbos plants of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

The mountain slopes of the reserve are covered with Overberg Mountain Fynbos, a vegetation type adapted to the near-desert situation of the Western Cape summers and its wet winters. The valleys and “kloofs” (canyons) that -right in front of your feet- suddenly and surprisingly cut deep into the land of farm 215, however, harbour a totally different natural world. Down there, water always flows abundantly. Next, to the streams, natural ponds and waterfalls, reed-beds, indigenous forest and thicket provide shelter for different species of antelope, resting place for baboons and hunting grounds for the cape clawless otter. Farm 215 has an extensive infrastructure of hiking trails and farm roads of more than 20 kilometres.

The water that comes out of the tap is sourced from high-up in the reserve and has the typical yellow-golden colour of the water from fynbos catchments, caused by tannins. The water source is in a pristine natural area and the water is not affected by any non-natural bodies. It is safe to drink and tastes fresh and delicious but there is always bottled (white) water in the room for those with a fear for natural water.

Farm 215 has been set up and is managed as a sustainable operation and is a Protected Area (PA) under the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act.

Reviews

“We really had a great vacation. Great location, great food, great time. If you want to have a quality time out, you are at the right spot. The accommodation was unique with extraordinary style and an outstanding view.” Stefan, TripAdvisor

“The Fynbos suites are unique. Given the fact that there are only 3, you really get the feeling you have your private nature reserve. The scenery is simply stunning. The suits have a nice balcony and one can simply enjoy the views. They arranged horseback riding through the dunes and on the beach, which is a thrill. The service has been great and very friendly.” Explore, TripAdvisor

“We had a lovely two nights here in March 2019. We were four people in total and so shared two of the (fantastic) free-standing suites. The suites have amazing views and are well appointed with log fire, good shower, massive beds and a nice terrace from which to enjoy the view. Bruce and his team cooked up some wonderful dinners and breakfasts and everyone was super friendly and passionate about their farm and its natural habitat. It rained for most of the time we were there, but this didn't spoil the experience. Would love to return one day!” Chris, TripAdvisor
