Fun on the Dunes :-)

Dave Caravias invites you to join him on a scenic coastal adventure in De Kelders, Gansbaai, with Fatbike Tours. Fatbikes are easy to ride and the voluptuous 4.7 Inch tyres are specially designed to glide over the sand. Be prepared to have the time of your life with the awesome sensation of being able to ride like a pro down the dunes in Walker Bay Nature Reserve, through fields of Fynbos and on the white sandy dunes of Die Plaat. The environmentally friendly rides have been carefully mapped out by Dave, and have been designed to educate as well as to exhilarate. Along the way, you may see dolphins, seals, Black Oyster Catchers and Southern Right Whales in season as well as animal tracks including Leopard, Honey Badger, Porcupine, Grysbok, and Caracal.

Sand Dunes Trail

Sand Dunes Trail

The Fatbike Tours Sand Dune Trail is the ultimate ride that begins close to Grootbos Nature Reserve and takes you down the mountain to the top of the sand dunes, in Walker Bay Nature Reserve.

The trail to the dunes takes you along a narrow sandy horse trail through endemic Fynbos. Once you reach the dunes after 800 meters the Dunes start and it is mostly downhill on a 5,5km ride down to Die Plaat Beach. After a briefing on how to ride down the dune, riders will each take a turn at practising their newly learned skill. Dave will also teach you how to do slalom like a skier on a snow ski-slope. For the less confident rider after the beginning section there is always an option to ride around the Dunes and watch the daring ride down the dune faces :-) The tour is suitable for all levels of rider from the age of 8 years old.

The vehicle will meet us at the bottom by Die Plaat beach and we will take the 4x4 route back up to De Kelders.

The tour includes water, helmets and free Videos and photos of the experience sent after on a dropbox link.

“The sunset ride with Dave on the sand dunes of Walker Bay was the most enjoyable activity of our trip to SA. Dave is a fantastic instructor; funny, encouraging and great company. The scenery is second to none, the biking is mostly downhill and the fun factor is awesome.
Thanks for making the ride so special Dave. Quote from my 8-year-old son "Best day's cycling ever!!!!" We will be back!”

“The Fatbike Tour was one of our son‘s favourite adventures during our trip through South Africa. It is really easy to learn, at the same time it is a lot of fun and really exciting to go down the steep dunes (there’s always an easy alternative if you don’t feel like it). The nature reserve is awesome, sometimes it feels like a desert but with an unbelievable sea view. Dave is a knowledgeable and good-natured guide with patience to make this a great experience for everyone. Plus, he takes pictures and videos with his Go-Pro, so you have tons of good memories afterwards. Would definitely do it again!” Arch, TripAdvisor
“We were staying at the Roundhouse Guesthouse, and Dave the owner suggested that we join him for a Fatbike Tour. We agreed as we had nothing to do that morning. I am so happy that we went. It was our first such experience and it was so much fun. Biking on the sand dunes was the highlight of our SA trip. Dave is an amazing instructor and was very patient with us newbies. Taught us a trick or two as well. We managed the trip without any issues and the photos were amazing. Dave sent them and videos of our adventure to a dropbox link almost immediately. Overall it was an unforgettable experience and we would love to go there again if possible. It was totally worth it.” Simar, TripAdvisor

About

Fatbike Tours

The tour has been running from 2015 with years of experience and knowledge of the reserve and dune fields.

Fatbikes weigh-in at around16kg and have tyers that are of the larger variety… 4.7-inches to be exact. The tyres are pumped to very low pressure and the wide tread prevents them from sinking into the sand.

The impact on the sand is minimal with the tracks being erased with the next wind. Fun for all from age 8 and from novices to pro riders.
