Boet Schoeman was the “brain” behind this tasteful initiative and it started out small but every year is has been growing, so that it has up to an astonishing 300 people attending this feast every year. For those individuals that do not have the “guts” to take the “sheep by the horns” they do serve some other divine meals with side plates and even delicious deserts.
Manie Groenewald and the Baardskeerdersbos band starts up the festivities with some “lekker” local “boere musiek” and the fires are started up early as many coals are needed as the evening continues till late!
Each sheep’s head is prepared in a special oven by the Swellendam “Skaapkopgilde” using their own unique and secret ways to make you “smile” while digging in.
Only 100 “Skaapkoppe” are available and one need not be skittish if you are inexperienced as help is nearby. You may bring along your own knives and forks and a professional is just a call away with a small sharp axe and a trencher to lend a hand if need be.
Ending the night off with satisfied taste buds, a full belly, old tales, jokes and a “lekker skoffel”, you will surely be urged to join us next year again.
