At 22h51, Monday, 23rd February, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) reporting the fishing trawler SILVER CHALLENGER requesting urgent medical assistance 12 nautical miles off-shore of Gansbaai. The fishing trawler had radioed a distress call to Telkom Maritime Radio Services reporting a 47 year old crewman collapsed onboard, suffering a suspected heart attack, and fellow crew had initiated CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts and were heading towards Gansbaai and requesting urgent medical assistance. NSRI Hermanus launched the sea rescue craft SOUTH STAR accompanied by a WC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic and met up with the casualty boat off-shore of Gansbaai but sadly, on arrival on the scene, despite CPR efforts, the fisherman was declared deceased. The body of the man was brought to Hermanus harbour aboard the sea rescue craft where the body of the deceased fisherman was handed into the care of Police and the Forensic Pathology Services. Sincere condolences are conveyed to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased fisherman.
