Friday, 5 February 2016 - The stifling hot weather did little to dim the enthusiasm and spirit of a group of trainees who recently graduated with a certificate in Peer Support under the Overstrand Association for Persons with Disabilities’ (OAPD) development and education programme. There to hand out the certificates and deliver a keynote address at Hawston Secondary School where the ceremony was hosted was the Executive Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie.
“With these newly-acquired skills and training you can now provide the necessary support to affected disabled persons and families serviced by OAPD.(Continue on Pg 9) The completion of this course will also hopefully pave the way for a number of employment and career opportunities in time to come,” encouraged Botha-Guthrie. Course convenor and trainer, Jacques Lloyd of Afrique Rehabilition and Research Consultants (ARRC), who is wheelchair bound after a diving accident years ago, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments.
“The training you’ve received here will allow you to offer support to your communities and assist the relevant welfare and social development agencies with the services and care they render to the disabled. Use this as a stepping stone and strive towards even greater heights; who knows, there may be a future social worker, doctor, teacher or even Mayor amongst you,” quipped Lloyd.
In closing, OAPD’s Coordinator of Peer Support, Lionel Isaacs thanked the Mayor and Overstrand Municipality for always endorsing the organisation and its work, as well as the invaluable input received over the years. The event ended on a spectacular note with a spread of delicious eats, treats and cheerful banter enjoyed by all in attendance.
