165 years ago the HMS Birkenhead hit an unchartered rock off Danger Point and quickly sank to the depths of the ocean taking with her more than 400 people.
Gansbaai Tourism co-ordinates the commemoration of this tragic event annually. On the 26th of February at 11h00 the memorial service will be held at the Danger Point Lighthouse. The Cape Welsh Mens choir will be part of the service this year. There is an official wreath-laying ceremony and you are welcome to bring flowers to lay at the foot of the monument as a remembrance gesture.
On the evening of the 25th there will be a talk on a Birkenhead related subject in the Tourism hall at 19h00. This event is sponsored by Marine Dynamics.
Everyone is welcome to attend the two events.
For catering purposes it would be appreciated if you could let Doulene at 028 384 1439 know by 20 February if you would like to attend one or both of the events.
(The Cape Welsh Choir will also be singing at the Family Church in Gansbaai at 09h00 on the 26th February).
