Gertie’s Legacy is a silkscreen printing company based in Gansbaai that focuses on original designs that reflect the Overberg’s beautiful natural landscapes, and deep-rooted history. The company’s inhouse textile designer Ger-Marié Englebrecht’s popular designs include Overberg town names, fishing trawlers, and proteas that are handprinted on 100% cotton textiles. Gertie’s Legacy’s fabrics are also used to make a range of soft furnishings such as scatter cushions and aprons. Gertie’s Legacy’s collection of fabric and soft furnishings are available at Kaliko Boutique Fabric Shop at 11 Main Street, Gansbaai. Consultations to discuss personalised orders are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with prior arrangement.

About

Gertie's Legacy was established by Elza Engelbrecht to showcase her daughter Ger-Marié Engelbrecht’s hand-printed, Overberg inspired, fabric range.

Ger-Marié studied textile design and technology and worked for various retail outlets which included ‘Jenni Button’ of the platinum group after which she worked as a freelance textile designer. Due to South Africa's shrinking textile industry, Elza and Ger-Marié saw a gap in the market and when the chance arose to rent premises that had once housed the legendary ‘Barendas Kontant Modewinkel’, Gertie's Legacy was born. Elza named the venture after her mom who was highly skilled in all house-crafts and whose talents Elza and Ger-Marié inherited.

The mother and daughter relocated to their home-studio in 2021 and use Kaliko Boutique Fabric Shop at 11 Main Street in Gansbaai as their main retail outlet. Private consultations are by arrangement only.

Fabric

Gertie’s Legacy’s exclusively designed textiles are hand-printed with silkscreen on durable 100% cotton fabric. The patterns and designs have nature-inspired themes relating to Gansbaai and the surrounding areas in the Cape Overberg. Prints include but are not limited to:
