Tolbos Bistro

Carol Devitt’s life took an unexpected yet adventurous turn in 2002 when she received a phone call from her mom who announced that she had just purchased a restaurant and needed help running it. Carol, who has a degree in sports science and was in the United States at the time, didn't hesitate for a moment, and immediately leapt on a plane to join her mom in her new venture. Tolbos eventually moved from the main road of Gansbaai to a traditional fisherman’s cottage dating back to 1921, which overlooks Gansbaai’s Old Harbour. The Devitt family painstakingly restored the stone cottage to its former glory, and the laid-back venue now has a welcoming vibe where guests instantly feel at home. Carol and her husband, Wayne, now run the bistro while Carol’s mom is a silent partner, concentrating on more important matters such as keeping an eye on her precious grandson, Luke. Luke grew up playing ‘restaurant-restaurant’ and at the tender age of five and would seriously confide in amused guests that he was the owner and was running the place. The Devitt family invite you to join them at what will surely become your home away from home.

Tolbos Bistro has a lot of hidden surprises for the whole family. The stone fisherman’s cottage is spacious with a huge stone fireplace which has an inviting fire roaring right throughout winter, making it a perfect romantic hideaway for couples seeking some one-on-one time or small groups of friends who enjoy a relaxing, social get-together. The spacious indoor and outdoor seating area is ideal for larger groups and the Devitts are able to cater for small weddings and birthday functions. The outdoor play area is perfect for kiddies parties.

• A petit menu featuring favourites such as mac & cheese, spaghetti bolognaise, baby burger & chips, fish or calamari & chips as well as the favourite for kids of all sizes (and ages) - milkshakes!

Adult Menu

• Starters, light meals (burgers, schnitzels, pasta and salads) and seafood (only the freshest and a speciality at Tolbos Bistro).

Desserts

• Sweet temptations baked by Carol's mom. Be sure not to miss the homemade lemon meringue pie, cheesecake and traditional malva pudding!

Beverages

• Tolbos is fully licensed and serve a selection of wine, malt, ciders and spirits as well as a selection of non-alcoholic beverages.
