Designers Without Borders South Africa forms part of a global organisation with the same name.
Founded in 2001, Designers Without Borders South Africa applies user-centred design practices to address complex challenges faced by organisations, businesses and communities in low and middle-income countries.
Designers Without Borders South Africa pays homage to its founder and CEO, the late Alfra Cox, for her invaluable contribution to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Fondly referred to as Tannie by those who knew and loved her, Alfra was passionate about communities, building communities and finding sustainable solutions to develop communities. Her contribution has made a huge impact on the community and left an incredible legacy that is a beacon of hope and inspiration.
”The program has helped me identify key issues and become more of a critical thinker. Beforehand I never knew that addressing issues locally on the ground can contribute to a global issue.” Lurvine, Youth Leader
Designers Without Borders South Africa devotes its expertise to initiatives aimed at benefiting disadvantaged communities with various projects.
Social Entrepreneurship is the main focus of DWB which runs regular workshops that are designed to inspire youths to use constructive thinking to empower themselves.
Youth Voices Project is a space for youth, especially girls, with diverse backgrounds to get involved in their communities in a meaningful way. This in turn creates a sense of self while helping others.
Designers Without Borders South Africa focuses on empowering other NGOs to operationally develop and implement practical on the ground strategies for managing successful soup kitchens.
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Designers Without Borders South Africa worked with 18 non-profit organisations in Grabouw to create a food relief effort. The organisation managed the distribution of food to approximately 6,000 people per day.
This lifesaving incentive morphed into an ongoing long-term solution and is now a food security project which includes various workshops to educate and upskill participants with skills regarding agriculture, nutrition, food preparation, health and safety.
Mobile Soup Kitchens
There are two mobile soup kitchens in the Grabouw community that run twice a week. DWB's goal is to grow this concept to include the distribution of valuable community information and possibly distribute medications and provide related services.
Designers Without Borders South Africa’s Danish partners have an arrangement with international designers who donate unsold garments to them to help sustain the cause.
The clothing donations are sorted and packed in Copenhagen and then shipped to South Africa. Converting the clothing into funds is a proactive way to empower and develop the organisation while promoting the global trend towards sustainable fashion.
