Eat - Drink - Shop - Relax - Play - Every Day

The Elgin Railway Market at Oak Avenue, Elgin nearby Grabouw is open seven days a week. This is the chance to eat, drink, shop and relax with like-mingle people at a bustling steampunk-meets-art deco-inspired market building in one of the Overberg’s most scenic valleys. Enjoy retail vendors, delicious food and local drinks with ample space to sit down and relax both inside and outside under umbrellas, while you listen to some great live music. To add to the charm, the Ceres Rail Company runs return trips from Cape Town to Elgin on weekends, and the train’s arrival can be viewed from the market’s mezzanine leisure deck.

About

About

The Elgin Railway Market venue was an old apple warehouse converted and carefully renovated to create a bustling Steampunk-meets-Art Deco showpiece.

History

The original building was built by Italian prisoners of war in the 1940s and the concrete tapered columns, and curved box gutters, bear testimony to the skill of these bygone craftsmen.

“Elgin Railway Market is an amazing place. The steampunk theme just does it! A wide arrangement of food stalls is available as well and market-goers are spoilt for choice. The calamari is the best I had in a long time.”  Curt August
“The beautiful old railway station building is filled with beautiful products to buy, and the freshest and widest range of foods that you can order and eat at tables inside or outside. There is also live music and listening to somebody singing while you enjoy your meal under an umbrella made our day five stars!”  Mandy Sykes-Robertson
“The Elgin Railway Market is held in a large open area that is well-ventilated. Lots of very yummy options including sushi, burgers, Greek food, Italian wine and craft gin. Live music and lots of fun. It’s only five minutes from the N2 highway. Don't miss out!”  Howard Cohn
“As a first-time visitor, I was blown away by this particular venue! So much planning and detail went into this. If you have never been to the Elgin Railway Market, do yourself the favour and take the drive there!”  Heils Verhoef
