Things to do in Greyton / Genadendal

Greyton / Genadendal is best known for the delightful Saturday Morning Market where visitors are hard-pressed to resist the famous lemon-curd pancakes or eccentric mixes like duck and cherry pies. However, the foodies' delight is certainly not the only thing that attracts visitors from across the Western Cape. The picturesque village beckons people of all interests with its range of outdoor activities, artistic characteristics and tranquil country ambience.

Greyton and Genadendal are fast becoming well-known destinations for mountain biking and now boast 65km of excellent biking trails, all entirely off-road. Some of the trails on the edge of the village are flat, fast, fun and safe and have been built with children and novices in mind, making Greyton and Genadendal the perfect environment in which to enjoy mountain biking as a family. Some trails are more extreme and beckon only the fit and experienced riders. Whether you prefer long-distance, steep ascents or a casual ride through the scenic countryside there is something for everyone. 

For those that prefer to be riding on four legs instead of two wheels, it is easy enough to arrange a horse-riding outing. Trail rides, horse riding lessons and carriage rides are all available depending on your level of expertise and sense of adventure. The outdoor adventures in Greyton and Genadendal don't stop there. The Greyton Nature Reserve is a gateway to bubbling streams, waterfalls, diverse fynbos and wildflowers that can all be observed on a walking or hiking trail. The prolific birdlife is something to truly admire as well. For those avid birdwatchers, there is a bird list for the Greyton area and birding tours if you desire a keen eye to point out the feathered beauties that have made the area their home. Outdoor enthusiasts can also swim in the river, canoe, take 4x4 trails, play tennis or bowls and simply let their feet do the walking as they take in the fresh mountain air. 

While adventurers may be in their element, those who savour things at a slower pace will also be spoilt for choice. Greyton and Genadendal are home to an incredible calibre of artists who draw inspiration from the scenic surroundings. Take a meander through the art galleries or join an art workshop to stimulate your creative side. Then there are Norma Muscroft's dollhouses that seem to come to life as you peep into the miniature world. Every detail has been thought out and they even have working light fixtures and inhabitants in varying poses. Most certainly a unique attraction to see.

For those in search of inner peace, there are several wellness treatments or retreats that can accomplish just that. For some added fun, there is yoga, bridge and line dancing to keep you busy. Then there are some events such as the soirée weekends that celebrate classical music, which should certainly be diarised. 

For educational fun, the interesting historical village walk is a gentle stroll that will transport you back in time. It is an informative activity that will illuminate Greyton and Genadendal from past to present. Visitors can also stroll through the shops and buy wonderful items for the home that include retro furniture or original artworks. Once you have worked up an appetite, the places to eat in Greyton and Genadendal are exquisite in both quality and friendly service.
