Report on Special General Meeting of Greyton Tourism Association

The GTA Management Committee consisting of Martin Coetzer, John McGlashan, Ria Wills, Roslyn Petersen and Peter Duncan requested the attendance of GTA members (defined as having paid fees, donations or commissions to GTA since 1 st  July 2021) to consider the future of tourism in Greyton.

After the effort of organising the Dorp Van die Jaar initiative and the Greyton Kia Makiete Festival, the Committee felt that GTA would benefit from having a dedicated younger commercial team with event, branding, social media and marketing experience with new ideas and incentives to drive Greyton Tourism to further heights.

The Committee felt:

  • There is a desire to make the work of GTA more commercial and successful.
  • It was not possible to rely on a small group of unpaid volunteers to achieve this aim.
  • There was a desire in the business community to hold thriving, monthly events benefiting the economy of Greyton and its community.
  • There is the possibility of feeding back a percentage of successful event funds into the community.

Resolution requested

That the assets of GTA be handed over on the 1st  September 2022 to a PTY company at commercial value and that the commercial new company operate the GTA office organising the marketing of Greyton as well as events for the benefit of the new company, Greyton, the business community and the Greyton Community.

GTA would request that the company have similar aims and objects to GTA and include for example:

  • the promotion of Greyton and its environs as a tourist destination;
  • the promotion of tourist potential through the provision and distribution of information concerning
  • tourist attractions and facilities;
  • to support and promote tourism for the benefit of the community and where possible to give back
  • to the community a percentage of net income derived from successful events;
  • to raise funds and acquire assets through its activities for the purpose of the above objects.

We are really excited to announce that the resolution was supported unanimously by the GTA Committee & by 100% of all voting members.

The tourism office will remain & Ros will join the new team (see below).

THE NEW GREYTON TOURISM

What is our main objective?

To grow tourism in Greyton through a social enterprise, bringing benefits to businesses, residents, the community and the environment.

How will we do this?

Providing a complete Tourism service ‘under one roof’ so that visiting and engaging with the village of Greyton is a seamless and integrated experience, including:

  • Booking accommodation
  • Finding out where to eat and drink, what to do
  • Providing all info and permits, encouraging visitors to explore the natural surroundings through
  • hiking/biking/horse riding
  • Influencing and uplifting the retail and restaurant environment, including the market
  • Using events to draw people to the village by supporting existing events and creating new ones
  • Promoting the Greyton lifestyle emphasising, and drawing from, its country values, cultural heritage and historic aesthetic.
  • Building on the work that GTA has done so far, strategically taking it to the next level
  • Partnering with stakeholders in the village to achieve the maximum benefit
  • Helping to sustain and improve livelihoods in the Greyton and surrounding communities

Our initial focus will be on creating the Greyton Tourism brand, rolling it out across digital channels, developing a brand new, highly functional website and growing our mailing lists and social media following. The current GTA have approved and supported our plans.
