Turning Disability Into Ability

Mind Over Matter is a non-profit organisation in Genadendal near Greyton that offers daycare services for mentally and physically disabled adults between the ages of 18 - 60. Fronted by Celestine Smith, the daycare centre is a home away from home from Monday to Friday. At Mind Over Matter, Celestine and her team of volunteers provide attendees with supervision and the necessary assistance to have a productive day. A nourishing breakfast and hot lunch are included with various activities on the day’s itinerary. Apart from working on craft projects, and learning other basic skills, those attending Mind Over Matter are proud of their vegetable garden. The produce grown is used to cook meals for those attending Mind Over Matter, as well as for a separate community feeding scheme. Mind Over Matter relies on volunteers to function and grow and welcomes all the help they can get. With this in mind, Mind Over Matter is grateful for any and all donations (cash and items on its wishlist).

About

Mind Over Matter was started by Celestine Smith, and co-founders Joseph Apollis, Esmeralda Lewis and Irene Kroukamp in 2007 as a support group for mentally challenged people. Although Joseph, Esmeralda and Irene are no longer with the organisation, their groundwork to establish the incentive remains invaluable.

Over the years this service grew to include those with physical disabilities.

Celestine Smith

Celestine struggled with psychological issues of her own, and was fortunate to have had parents who were able to provide her with specialised medical care and therapy.

In 1998, she lived her dream of helping her community by working at the Child Welfare Organisation. She gained administrative knowledge to get started with her support group.

After going on to become a social auxiliary worker and with help from her family and friends, Celestine established Mind Over Matter.

In 2009, with the support of students from the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape, and Dutch HAN students attending Cape Peninsula University of Technology, donations started to trickle in. Then the big break Celestine had prayed for, the Overberg Regional Municipality boosted Mind Over Matter with a donation of R30,000!

The Department of Social Development and the Department of Art & Culture have been providing funding for Mind Over Matter since 2012.
