CapeNature is the custodian of the Western Cape’s natural environment and is governed by the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board which is mandated to:
CapeNature is responsible for managing and maintaining 31 complexes, made up of 113 nature reserves and wilderness areas, that include six Marine Protected Areas, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Please note, CapeNature permits are applicable for certain areas and activities. The full list is as follows:

Kogelberg Nature Reserve is about 40 km from Cape Town and is South Africa’s first UNESCO biosphere reserve. It covers 103,629 hectares, more than 80% of which consists of mountainous landscapes ranging from high mountain peaks and deep valleys to gentle hills, lower mountain slopes and a historic botanical garden. Gentle rolling coastal plains, and a vast marine area, which covers about 24,500 hectares, make up the rest.

Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty’s Bay is home to the world’s third-largest breeding colony of African penguins. The reserve offers the public the chance to observe the penguins up-close, via an unobtrusive boardwalk, as they go about their daily activities in their natural habitat.

Walker Bay Nature Reserve in the Overberg includes five coastal areas between Hermanus and Die Dam near Struisbaai. The largest area, known as Walker Bay, stretches along Die Plaat from the Klein River estuary in Hermanus to the historic Klipgat Caves in De Kelders, Gansbaai.

De Hoop Nature Reserve just outside Bredasdorp is one of the largest natural areas managed by CapeNature and is a World Heritage Site. The 34,000-hectare reserve includes a 16km long vlei, rare fynbos, diverse wildlife species and the majestic Potberg Mountains, as well as a marine protected area that extends 5km out to sea.

De Mond Nature Reserve is a coastal reserve at the mouth of the Heuningnes River. It lies about 26km south-east of Bredasdorp on the south-western Cape coast, between Arniston and Struisbaai and is a World Heritage Site.
Activities:
Marloth Nature Reserve is tucked away in the Swellendam Mountains, between Swellendam, Ashton, Barrydale and Suurbraak. The peaceful reserve is 14,123-hectares in size and is a World Heritage Site.

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is a World Heritage Site that encompasses 250-hectares of indigenous forest in the Langeberg region, close to Heidelberg.
Activities:
Boosmansbos Wilderness Area is a World Heritage Site next to the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve in the Langeberg Mountains. It boasts dramatic mountainous terrain, wild indigenous forests and lush mountain fynbos.
