Hermanus High School Old Scholar Association (OSA) is rooted in a long tradition of education and community, predating the establishment of the high school.
The earliest beginnings of formal schooling in Hermanus stretch back to the late 19th century, when St. Peter’s Mission School was founded in 1868 and later joined by the Dutch Reformed Church School in 1884. In 1897, these two pioneering institutions combined to form the town’s first public school, laying the foundation for generations of students.
In 1907, construction began on a striking stone school building below Hoy’s Koppie, which was completed in 1911. By 1918, the school had gained primary status under headmaster Mr S.G. du Toit, offering structured education to local children. As the community grew, so did the school’s ambitions. Official high school status was awarded in 1941, and the first matric class sat their examinations in December 1942.
Growth continued through the mid‑20th Century, but overcrowding led to a decision to build anew. In 1974, construction of a new campus began, and by 1977, Hermanus High School had moved to its current grounds. Today, the school is recognised for its strong traditions across all spheres and a vibrant alumni network that spans generations.
Out of this rich history, past pupils and teachers naturally sought ways to stay connected so that they could support one another and their alma mater. This shared pride gave rise to the Old Scholar Association (OSA).
The OSA is a close community where memories are honoured, friendships are renewed, and the spirit of Hermanus High lives on long after graduation.
