Her Story - His Story - Our Story

The Hermanus History Society is a non-profit organisation that works towards becoming the premier source of information concerning the history of the greater Hermanus area (from Voelklip to Fisherhaven), the Hemel-en-Aarde valley and selected inland rural areas. This historical information is freely available to all interested parties and is shared via means of projects and events. At present, the Hermanus History Society relies solely on member subscriptions to fund the organisation.

Hermanus History Society was established on the 31st of May 2012.


The aim of the Hermanus History Society is:

  1. To bring the history of Hermanus alive to residents and visitors.
  2. To create an awareness of history among the people in the Hermanus area whose ancestors lived in this area.
  3. To encourage the collection and preservation of historical resources.
  4. To share historical information through hosting exhibitions, preserving historical sites, using invited speakers, arranging outings to historical sites and by sharing historical information collected by members.
  5. To assist in the identifying and preservation of historical documents of interest, and to enable easier access to these documents for members and others.
  6. To liaise with the Heritage and Aesthetics Committee, the Old Harbour Museum and other bodies interested in the history of Hermanus.


Hermanus History Society has spearheaded projects and project ideas that have included:

  • Stitching communities together – A Hermanus History Society Project
  • History of Hawston (Tussen Berg en See) - English Translation Project
  • School History Project
  • Swallow Neethling Memorial Park - Recreate her Historical Garden 
  • Ella Gordon’s Horse Graveyard at Karwyderskraal - Restoration Project
  • Windsor Hotel Project
  • Marine Hotel Project


Hermanus History Society as arranged events that have included:

  • Victoria Cross Remembered - 100 years later

  • Horse Whisperer’s Story Comes to Stage in Hermanus
  • Anne Frank Exhibition
  • Marine Hotel at FynArts
