Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

Hermanus Recycling is a materials recycling facility (MRF) that deals with recyclable items collected from an area that covers the greater Hermanus region. As the contractor for the Overstrand Municipality, Hermanus Recycling is the collection point for all clear bag recyclable products which get sorted manually to be distributed to repurposing plants throughout South Africa. Running about 80 tonnes per month, Hermanus Recycling processes plastic, paper, cardboard and glass at the MRF. Other than municipal deliveries, it also accepts drop-offs by the general public. Striving to educate the community, Hermanus Recycling is always on hand with advice about the best way to go about recycling and waste management.

About

After relocating from Cape Town to Hermanus, civil engineer, Jan van Niekerk, bought the Hermanus Recycling plant in 1995.  For over 30 years, Hermanus Recycling has focused on sustainability through environmental responsibility and active job creation. The company is proud to serve communities in an area that stretches from Rooi-Els to Voëlklip in Hermanus.

Jan’s history with recycling dates back to when he was a child growing up in Epping, Cape Town. To make pocket money, he was always busy collecting and recycling the garbage that most other people only saw as trash. Very soon, the need to make spending money grew into a desire to educate those around him about the advantages of recycling for a cleaner environment.

Hermanus Recycling plant is a manual operation that empowers the community with job creation for a close-knit team of over twenty recyclers.

When he isn’t busy recycling, Jan enjoys championing fundraising incentives for the Overberg Wheelchair Association.
