Civil engineer Jan van Niekerk moved from Cape Town to Hermanus in 1995, taking the helm of Hermanus Recycling and steering the company towards a future of sustainability and community impact.
Jan's passion for recycling began in childhood while growing up in Epping, Cape Town. To earn pocket money, he collected and recycled items that most people simply saw as rubbish. What started as a way of earning extra spending money soon developed into a lifelong commitment to educating others about the environmental benefits of recycling and the importance of keeping communities clean.
Proudly serving the area from Rooi-Els to Voëlklip, Hermanus Recycling continues to make a positive impact, one initiative at a time.
When he is not at work, Jan is equally committed to giving back to the community, dedicating his time to fundraising initiatives for the Overberg Wheelchair Association.
Hermanus Recycling provides an integrated approach to waste management.
The MRF accepts plastic, paper, cardboard, and glass, which is carefully sorted before being balled and distributed to relevant processing plants in Cape Town, Richards Bay, Piet Retief and Johannesburg.

Although Hermanus Recycling is not responsible for handing out clear bags for recycling, the team is always on hand to point the community in the right direction.
Households who did not receive a replacement clear bag on collection day or need additional clear bags due to larger volumes of recyclable items can collect bags at the following locations:
