Jan Biltong celebrates the age-old meat air-drying tradition of over 400 years.
Oom Jan and his team remain true to the principles of supplying the excellent products many South Africans can’t do without.
Born and raised at the foot of the Maloti Mountains in Lesotho, Jan’s father Pa Biltong was dedicated to providing for his family and directly sourced the food they required by hunting. He taught his son everything he knows about the art of perfect meat drying.
At that time, they had to make do without fridges and preserved the meat in a cement cooler.
Jan grew up with this tradition and refined his skill to prepare meat and biltong.
Yellow fat biltong was a favourite pastime snack during his family's coastal vacations. Their holiday neighbours and friends swooned over the deliciously meaty treats. This inspired Jan to continue his father's legacy and share it with all biltong lovers.
Jan Biltong has a selection of products that are not only of the highest quality but also available in a variety of options to ensure you find exactly what you’re looking for.
Oom Jan says if you were wondering about wagyu, it is beef biltong that has the lowest cholesterol levels of all meats.
Wagyu also has up to 300% more monounsaturated fat than normal beef due to the marbling of the meat and contains oleic acid which is considered to be healthy for the heart. It is also incredibly high in omega 3 and omega 6 content.
