“My greatest inspiration is life…” Takura Chadoka
Takura Chadoka grew up just outside Zimbabwe’s capital city Harare, in a town called Chitungwiza.
Takura’s passion for art was ignited when he won an art competition at the age of 12. This achievement inspired him to study art in high school.
After leaving school, he enrolled at The National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Art but had to abandon his studies in 2003 for financial reasons. The talented artist didn’t see this as a problem but rather as a challenge. In 2004 he joined a group of Zimbabwean artists for a series of workshops and would often visit the Gallery Delta in Harare asking them to review his portfolio. Takura cites an up-and-coming member of Young African Artists, Tichaona Jorofani, as his main teacher in the use and knowledge of colour within a contextual framework.
After participating in the annual Harare Art Fair, Takura started to get noticed by the art world and was approached by local galleries to exhibit his work. He continued to exhibit in Zimbabwe until he relocated to Cape Town in 2006.
In 2018 his pièce de résistance was a large-scale mechanised sculptural work in wire, paper and cement which was exhibited at AfrikaBurn in Tankwa.
Driven by survival instinct as much as creative passion and collaborative practice, Takura is always involved in an array of art workshops and exhibitions.
The walls of Takura Chadoka’s shop are adorned with canvases created using various mediums, and a whole lot of colour.
Takura’s artworks showcase a unique style that can only be captured by an artist who has lived and loved under the beautiful African sky. His self-portraits combine the flat quality of screen printing with the painterly quality of colour washes.
