Tips for your home workspace

Tips for your home workspace

Cape Coastal Homes (Claudia Liebenberg)

I believe that happy people work where they live, so I have been trying to carve out a neat workspace in my home. If you work for yourself, have a demanding job or need a space separate your work from your personal life, these tips might help.

Find inspiration

Save images of home offices / workspaces that you like. This will help you define your style and it’s fun. Your home may be bigger or smaller than those in your inspiration file and your needs will be different. Therefore, the final product might not look like any of your inspiration images but gathering them is fun and will give you some direction to get started.

Set your budget and make it work

When setting the budget, think about the type of work you’ll be doing in your workspace. Will you be writing, or perhaps doing arts and crafts? Knowing what you’ll be doing will help you decide what to prioritise when shopping. You’ll know whether to spend more on the table than a bookshelf and other items that will make your day-to-day tasks easier.

Get some motivation

Once you’ve set up your workspace, keep something in it that will remind you why you love your work or a memento that will remind you how far you’ve come. This will help you to keep trying when times are tough.

Keep it tidy

Draw up a schedule to help you keep your space organised. Also, set up boundaries that will help you separate your home space from your workspace. All work-related items should stay in your workspace. Bringing homey things into your workspace will distract you and having work in your home space will add to your stress.
