IKhaya Youth Development accommodates teenagers who could not complete the mainstream educational system into an alternative and informally skills development programme that takes them off the streets, and give them back their self-worth.
Four small businesses were identified and established consisting of a mechanical workshop, nursery, furniture and steel factory and cement works where assistantships are offered. This allows them to be led to discover skills, interests and talents. With the right guidance, they can learn that their future literally lies in their own hands and those amazing abilities are as valuable as scholastic learning.
They can therefore join an economic role player at the age of 18, where they can apply the learned expertise. Learners who first rebelled against the school system are amazed when they discover that they can prosper and use their aptitudes in other ways.
The dream of iKhaya is to create a platform for these teenagers where they can dream of a future where they can be successful, proud and confident in their capabilities.
