The Stanford Street Festival between between 10:00 – 16:00 on 11 December brings a carnival spirit to the main street of Stanford. 2016 will see the festival grow even more, and the road closure of Queen Victoria Street makes it a fun day of festivities for the whole family.
From street performers and live music, to motorbikes and vintage cars, from arts and crafts to a visit from Father Christmas, from wine, craft beer and Cap Classique to local food trucks and restaurants with their stoeps open to customers, this day is simply bursting with activity. Catch the long board and skateboard race, the Stanford Dip, the Ready, steady slow snail race, and the Carry your partner race to win your weight in wine!
Over 160 market vendors will help you complete your Christmas shopping all in one day, so if it is locally grown olive oil, screen-printed table cloths, homemade leather goods, doggy treats, toys or vintage goods you need, look no further than the Stanford Street Festival for the best of what the Cape whale coast has to offer.
This year the excitement will be happening on Sunday 11 December from 10am-4pm when Queen Victoria Street will once again be closed for the Festival. This year, Stanford Tourism are looking for 150 Stalls and 6,000 visitors and in order to achieve this will be repeating much of what was most successful last year but adding to the excitement with a few more original touches.
Alongside Stanford’s shops, galleries, and antique and vintage shops, you will find an eclectic mix of stall. Most are from the Overberg but many are from Cape Town and a few from as far afield as Johannesburg. You’ll find much to enjoy, handcrafted jewellery, clothing , hand designed t-shirts ,linen, luxurious toiletries, preserves, collectables baskets, cosmetics, cushions, handmade chocolates, leather work, metal and wire work, plant boxes, soaps, toys for the children and much ,much more. With Stanford having two galleries there will be art from all over South Africa and many of our local artists will be on show in the street.
If you want to take a break from shopping, our excellent local restaurants, a number of whom are amongst the best in South Africa, along with the Food trucks and Food stalls in the Food Mall will take care of your food requirements. The source of the foods is multinational in their origins and exciting in their taste, ranging from Italy to America, South Africa to India, Asia to England with maybe a little French thrown in.
Visitors to the Wine and Beer Garden which abuts the Food Mall, will be able to sample not just the outstanding products of the Stanford Wine Route but the light whites and heady reds of Worcester, Stellenbosch, Piketberg and Villiersdorp as well as the amber ales of Stanford’s own brewery and a number of Micro Breweries besides. For the bon viveur there’s the stylishness of Cap Classique and oysters to be enjoyed and for the adventurous old English Mead will be dispensed.
There is a complete programme of Street Entertainment which the children and adults will love, with free magic shows, jugglers, acrobats music and more in the pipeline. Children can also have their faces painted, see Father Christmas, ride the “Whale Express”, touch a snake or monitor lizard, visit a travelling museum and take part in our Ready ,Steady ,Slow Snail Race.
Over 12’s can win prizes in our unique “Stanford Dip Board Race” and The Triumph Sports Car Club will be bringing a bevy of beauties for all to see, but not touch but if you want to get hands on and you’re over 18 there’s the “Worth their Weight Race”. This year if you are feeling fit and energetic you can win your partners weight in wine by carrying them the length of the course and across the finish line.
To join in the festivities, just drive along the R43 to Stanford and follow the parking signs to the Village Green. There will be ample parking and Stanford looks forward to seeing you there.
