About

“Join us in empowering your child's educational journey with confidence and joy.”

Khula Learning Centre began when Jeanine Roux recognised a growing need for a nurturing educational space for children who don’t quite fit into either mainstream or special needs schooling.

The centre welcomes all children who find it challenging to adapt in a traditional school setting. While the CAPS curriculum is supported, education moves at a gentler, more supportive pace in a calm, distraction-free environment where every child can feel safe and valued.

Khula Learning Centre Swellendam offers flexible, supportive learning using:

  • Impaq CAPS-based Curriculum (for Grade R to Grade 6)
  • NeuroMe (for Grade 7 and up)

The Impaq CAPS-aligned curriculum provides a strong academic framework while
allowing each learner to progress at their own pace. With this curriculum, learners can
matriculate as homeschoolers or transition back to a mainstream school at any stage of
their schooling career.

The centre is committed to inclusivity, welcoming learners from all backgrounds, including
those who face challenges related to neurodiversity.

With a dedicated team of qualified teachers, every child receives the individual
attention and support they need to thrive, both academically and socially.

Khula Learning Centre’s staff includes:

Joanne Human - Director, Marketing and Communication

“Ever since my daughter’s diagnosis six years ago, I have been deeply passionate about learning more about neurodiversity, exploring challenges, behaviours, and solutions. While I don’t hold a formal qualification in education, I am surrounded by family and friends in education and psychology, and I continue to equip myself with knowledge every day.

I believe every child deserves a chance in life and the benefit of the doubt. My greatest reward is seeing a struggling child begin to thrive. Coming from an entrepreneurial background, my role at Khula focuses on communication, management, marketing, and working closely with our staff.

I am also a farmer’s wife and a proud mother of four, which keeps me grounded and gives me a personal perspective on the joys and challenges of raising children. I have a strong passion for creative education and enjoy finding playful, innovative ways to support learning. Together with our teachers and supporting therapists, I strive to help create an environment where children can grow, succeed, and feel empowered.”

Mariette Barry - Director, Finances

“I am a mother of three, with my two older boys diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

Over the years, I have immersed myself in learning about autism and neurodivergence. To better understand and support my children, I’ve worked with paediatricians, psychologists and psychiatrists. My husband and I have worked tirelessly to find ways for our boys to thrive and for our family to live in harmony.

When mainstream schooling proved too challenging for our younger son, my friend and business partner, Joanne Human, and I began searching for alternatives. Our journey led us to the Khula Learning Centre in Bredasdorp, which inspired us to open Khula Learning Centre Swellendam, following the Impaq Online School model.

At Khula, my roles are communication and finances, and I am passionate about supporting parents facing similar challenges while helping children discover their own path to success.”

Magda Gericke - Teacher (Foundation Phase Grades R - 3)

“I am a retired Foundation Phase teacher with a strong background in remedial education. I have three children and two grandchildren who bring me endless joy.

I love reading, gardening, and discovering new things. After 38 years in education, helping children grow and succeed remains my greatest passion. Over the past 15 years, I have offered extra classes for Grade 1 - 5 learners, with a special heart for those who face challenges in areas like maths or reading. Supporting children to overcome barriers and discover their potential is what inspires me every day.”

Beate Van Rooyen - Teacher (Intermediate Grades 4 - 6)

“I am a trained and qualified registered nurse with a deep love for education and the joy of seeing people grow while they heal. Over time, I’ve discovered a special passion for working with neurodiverse children. My medical background gives me a unique perspective on understanding their diagnoses and needs.

Outside of work, I’m an animal lover who enjoys nature walks on my days off. At school, the subjects I enjoyed most were biology and natural sciences, which continue to shape my curiosity about the world. I’d describe myself as strong-willed, punctual, and guided by mutual respect. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and that each challenge we face can become an opportunity to grow.”

So-Andri Smalberger - Teacher (Senior Phase Grades 7 - 10)

“I qualified in 2021 with a B.Ed. in Senior Phase and FET Teaching.

To date, I have gained valuable teaching experience at Laerskool Buffeljagsrivier and High School Barrydale, as well as through the diverse practical placements I experienced during my studies. I continue to grow as an educator at Khula Swellendam, especially in supporting and working with neurodivergent students.

What I love most about teaching is that every day is different. I enjoy guiding my students, but I also learn from them. Their unique personalities and perspectives constantly remind me of the importance of understanding, empathy, and compassion. I strive to be a steady support system for learners, just as my own teachers were for me during challenging times.

My goal is to help, inspire, and create a classroom where every child feels seen, valued, and capable of success.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time with friends and loved ones, seeking out new adventures, and sharing plenty of laughs. Naturally talkative, warm, and light-hearted, I am always willing to go the extra mile for the people I care about.”

Reviews

“Our son has found a wonderful learning home at Khula Learning Centre Swellendam, and an accepting, supportive family in his friends and tutors. The small foundation phase classroom provides individual support tailored to his needs, and he gets the right balance of structure and freedom. After experiencing the difficulties in the mainstream school system for our neurodivergent son, we are so grateful that Mariette and Joanne had the courage and determination to provide this excellent option for children with unique gifts and needs. This is the answer for families seeking an alternative. Our child has grown in confidence, found a healthy intrinsic motivation for learning, and is given the freedom to be himself.”  Jenni van Niekerk
