About

Lekkerwater beach lodge is set on an exclusive concession in the heart of De Hoop Nature Reserve, a scenic three-hour drive from Cape Town.

Once the site of a former presidential retreat, the lodge has been reimagined to embrace the privacy and beauty of its location. Each of its seven suites has been designed with a subtle coastal aesthetic, open-plan layouts and private decks that bring the shoreline inside. A series of wooden boardwalks connects the suites to the main lodge.

Guests can enjoy communal areas at the lodge, which include a wraparound deck with stunning views, a plunge pool, a gin bar, and a wood-fired hot tub on the beach, perfect for relaxing while taking in the natural surroundings.

Mealtimes are a delicious, all-inclusive special experience. Whether it’s breakfast on your suite’s deck, feet-in-the-sand lunches, beach braais, or shared meals at communal dinner tables by the chefs’ open kitchen, each moment offers its own charm.

Whether exploring the natural wonders of the reserve, enjoying moments on your private deck, making new friends, or savouring meals by the sea, every experience is crafted to make your stay unforgettable.

Immersive Nature-based Experiences

Spend your days immersed in the natural wonders of De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Stroll along the intertidal zones with expert guides, exploring the vibrant marine life, or wander through the endemic fynbos that carpets the coastal dunes. Along the way, uncover the area’s rich archaeological heritage, which reveals its pivotal role in human evolution.

For those seeking a slower pace, the lodge offers the perfect retreat. Guests can unwind with a book on their private deck, soak in the views, or relax beside a cosy fire, letting the sights and sounds of the reserve create a truly restorative experience.

De Hoop Nature Reserve

Lekkerwater beach lodge finds itself within De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Stretching across 34,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, the reserve is a treasure of the Western Cape, where rolling fynbos hills meet untouched coastal ecosystems. Its unique location also includes the De Hoop Marine Protected Area (MPA), a 289-square-kilometre marine sanctuary. Fishing and harvesting are strictly prohibited here, allowing marine life to flourish.

Every year, southern right whales journey from the icy waters of Antarctica to the warmer seas of the Western Cape to calve and mate. Between June and December, visitors are often treated to sightings of southern right whales, alongside the less common Bryde’s and humpback whales. Dolphins frequently ride the waves near the shore, adding to the vibrant marine life on display.

On land, De Hoop is equally captivating. Over 1,500 species of indigenous fynbos carpet the reserve, part of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It preserves the largest area of lowland fynbos in the Western Cape, offering a paradise for botanists, hikers, and anyone who loves being surrounded by natural beauty.

Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty to marvel at, with more than 80 mammal species roaming the reserve. Endangered bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, and eland can often be seen grazing peacefully. Elusive predators such as the Cape mountain leopard and caracal make their presence known only to the most patient observers.

Birdwatchers are in for a treat because De Hoop is home to over 260 bird species. The reserve also protects the last remaining breeding colony of Cape vultures in the Western Cape. From soaring raptors to playful seabirds, every visit offers a chance to connect with the incredible diversity of life in this remarkable corner of South Africa.

“Lekkerwater was the absolute highlight of our round trip. We were able to spend two nights in this fantastic environment. The journey to the lodge from the main gate via gravel roads was already an adventure. Once you reach your destination, you are rewarded for all the effort. The nature, environment and atmosphere at this place are unique and special. We were able to observe numerous whales from the terrace. The guided walks and hikes are very informative and educational. Dining is first-class! We'll be back one day.”  Tim
“This location is unstoppable! Lekkerwater Beach Lodge is located in the middle of the De Hoop Reserve. With only a few rooms, you arrive as strangers and leave as friends. The staff was fantastic and our every wish was fulfilled. Our room has a great terrace with unbeatable views of the sea and whales passing by. It was just great!”  Daniela
“Having travelled extensively for many years, I would never have thought that I would conclude that this was the best weekend of my life. We were fortunate enough to have been about to book out Lekkerwater on an exclusive use basis for seven couples in celebration of my 50th birthday. What a weekend it was!”  Johan
“A stay at Lekkerwater is all about full immersion in Cape coastal nature.”  Justin Fox
“Lekkerwater has beautiful views of the ocean, and it is far away from civilisation. On arrival at De Hoop Nature Reserve’s front gate, we were collected for a rather steep drive through the dunes to arrive at a modern lodge. There are separate outbuildings that are individual seafront rooms. This place is for people who love nature, hiking through the dunes or relaxing on the beach. There are organised activities that consist of two walks with extensive explanations provided by the owners, who are two biologists. These excursions are interesting and worthwhile. Guests share meals at a long table in the lodge. On the first evening, the story of the area was revealed next to the fireplace. A Gin Bar opens at 18:00. The meals were lovely and full of interaction between the guests. It is truly a different “safari” experience.”  Marjo en Willy
“What a spectacular place, managed by a passionate, attentive and pleasant team. The position of Lekkerwater Beach Lodge is magnificent, the food is delicious, the rooms are comfortable (each with a fireplace), and the hospitality is outstanding. Daily activities were simply brilliant, and our guide had the total attention of our group on our marine and inland hike. We loved his fascinating story sessions. Lekkerwater is one of the jewels on the South African coast. Thanks for a memorable visit.”  Margaret
“Lekkerwater is perfectly situated between the fynbos and has sea views for miles! This luxury lodge caters to all your needs. The staff was attentive, and we enjoyed 5-star dining. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. I can not fault anything and only wish our trip didn't have to end.”  Happy Guest
“Lekkerwater perches above the pearly sands and dolphin-studded waves of De Hoop Nature Reserve. Whales are the big draw, but throw in spotless wild beaches, fynbos-swathed hills, delicious food and top-notch wine and you’ve got one of the country’s best coastal retreats.”  Time Magazine
