Our family of three is living in Germany because that's where the work is for academics in their field. Our grandson has not yet graduated from kindergarten so he is not an academic but he has no choice but to go along with his parents.  Fortunately he doesn't much care where he is as long as they are there too.  His mother is German, his father speaks South African english and he is rapidly becoming bilingual although his German is better than his English right now.  This is hardly surprising when he only hears English spoken at home.  

When they arrived he spoke a lot of German to me and I had to explain that I needed to be spoken to in either English or Afrikaans. As the days went by we communicated more and more in English until there was no German at all except for marvellous words like 'kaput' and 'achtung'.  

Of course when they left we sent presents for our new family in Germany and of course we packed them in K & K boxes with strict instructions not to let my son have charge of them. He's a very cavalier packer.  

We also added a set of envelopes made from local magazines. They were almost the biggest hit of all.  

"What fun," we were told, "to get something so different and unexpected. We'll enjoy using them."  

Any gift you wish to give, Kerneels can make a box or bag for it. Well perhaps I should qualify that a little, we'd have a little trouble making a box for a washing machine.
