We routinely use small clear plastic bags with a seal to store a broken chain or hand over money or for a thousand other uses - but we want to cut down on plastic pollution.
We've had family members up against trouble in the last month and there wasn't much we could do to help except be there for them.
Phone calls, WhatsApp messages and emails are very encouraging but a small gift is a nice idea too. One doesn't want to make it something expensive, just something thoughtful.
I picked an A-bucket (R5.00) tied a jaunty bow around the handle and stuffed it with her favourite toffees. A week later I followed up with a butterfly box (R5.80) filled with potpourri. The box makes it something of an occasion.
Actually, one's gift doesn't have to come in a box, it can come in an envelope.
This isn't my idea but I think it's lovely: someone I know put on thick lipstick and kissed a piece of tissue paper which she folded up and put in an envelope and left with an unhappy friend. What cheer that brought!
