Pikkewyntjies / Penguinkidz October 2025 News...
Our October 2025 newsletter is packed with heartwarming updates, proud achievements, and a whole lot of learning fun!
In recent weeks the whole province has been flattened by COVID. As I read yesterday in a comment by Sibongakonke Mama of AmaBhungane some people are in boats but some are clinging desperately to pieces of driftwood to stay afloat.
The little Pikkewyntjies would have drowned by now without the love and care of Zaan and Louise and Genevieve and Christen and the people in the boats who have not seen that helpless driftwood but guessed it was there.
Because of them, the Pikkewyntjies are well and even happy and their parents are not in desperate straits either. As Hugh Grant says in Love Actually one starts to think the world is full of hatred and greed sometimes but he thinks it’s actually filled with love.
Take Adventures for Love, an organisation which came to our school once before to help us snake-proof our playground and to give our children a red letter day. Once again they have reached out to help us with a large donation of fruit and vegetables. Sandra, the Chairlady of our Board and her husband, Sedrick also made up parcels of fruit and vegetables and delivered them to the families who don’t live in Mooi Uitsig. Think of all those vitamins boosting immune systems and keeping our children well.
Another friend of the school who lives overseas and ordinarily sponsors the Pikkewyntjies weekend soup kitchen for all the children of Mooi Uitsig sent money for fruit and vegetables. He also sent money for sanitiser. We hadn’t thought of it but of course, we need rather a lot of that.
Mindful of the wet, windy Cape winter now holding us in its chilly grip, knitters in Cape Town, Rooi Els, Hangklip and Kleinmond joined forces to make each Pikkewyntjie a gift of a jersey, a beanie, a pair of gloves and a pair of bed socks. No- one knew they were at work for our children, nor of the hours spent lovingly creating the garments but the children were very excited about a gift and the joy of unwrapping it and new clothes and warmth even on the coldest days.
The Pikkewyntjies are doing their bit too, bless their hearts and carefully completing their assignments at home. They are longing to get back to school and ask every day when the virus will be gone.
