When one pops in at Pikkewyntjies for some reason there’s always a gentle hum of a school happily at work.
Story time at Pikkewyntjies is always a particularly favourite time, of course. Who doesn’t love a good story. One day it was the perennial favourite ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. When the terrifying troll got his come-uppance and good had triumphed over evil just as we all hope it always would, everyone was given a sheet of paper to draw the scene - but according to directions as in 1 bridge, 1 troll, 2 mountains, three Billy Goats Gruff and so on. Carrying out instructions was almost as much fun as listening to the story.
The Pikke in the next-door classroom, meanwhile, were feathering baby birds ready for Summer. It required concentration and care - glue and feathers are awkward things to control - and congratulations are due to such small hands for ‘dressing’ their birds.
Then there was a visit from G-CAP, an organisation which was founded in 2013. G-CAP stands for Great Cape Ambassadors Program and their mission is to help alleviate the ravages of high unemployment. They arrived with smiles and friendly exchanges with the children and the staff and a huge load of extremely welcome food, toys, blankets and the like. Pikkewyntjies has Shiberam from Domino Effect to thank. She is also a Pikkewyntjies donor and introduced G-CAP to the school. The kindness of South Africans to other South Africans...
