Fanie has specific skills in treasury and funding/liquidity management, as well as ALM (Asset and Liability Management). His career in banking started in 1974 at Trust Bank, and later Bank of Johannesburg and Santam Bank. During this time he gained experience in general banking with the emphasis on hire purchases, rentals, personal loans and credit management, as well as general administration.
He then joined Santam Bank’s Head Office, Treasury Department, a medium sized bank in South Africa and was responsible for the money market, treasury, funding and gaining practical experience of dealing liquid and prescribed asset portfolios. He finally set up an Asset and Liability Management System and the associated processes at Santam, and was a member of the bank’s ALCO, also responsible for the recommendation of funding strategies.
He was later appointed Assistant General Manager at Bankorp (one of the largest banks in Africa), in control of the money market operations, which included money and capital market trading, cash management, funding, and running the six corporate money market branches in the major business centres in the country.
This later became part of ABSA as the largest bank in Africa.
Fanie has presented Treasury & Risk / ALM seminars & courses in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Tanzania & Mauritius.
He has guest lectured at universities like Rand Academic University, University of the North and NTU in Singapore, as well as various banking institutes and colleges around the world.
After leaving ABSA, he established a money market operation for a Johannesburg stock broking firm, Senekal, Mouton and Kitshoff, and joined SPL WorldGroup’s Banking Division (now Riskflow) in 1994. He took care of the operations in African & Asian countries and visited these countries to explore business opportunities. His duties included consultancy and training on ALM and treasury-related issues. He is an experienced trainer, and has presented courses in many countries. He is a seasoned banker and treasurer, with experience ranging from branch management to setting up treasury operations from scratch.
In 2003 he started BOFIN where he acted as an agent for companies in marketing Treasury & ALM software & training programs. He also presented many training courses in various countries in the African & Asia region. Training institutions (university, college & other) were very involved in the marketing & presenting of these programs. A close relationship is always kept with these partners & institutions in updating programs to present the latest information & trends in the international marketplace.
