We Care For Animals

BARC Animal Welfare is a non-profit organisation serving vulnerable dogs and cats in the greater Gansbaai area. The organisation provides essential animal rescue services, stepping in when animals face abuse, neglect, unsafe conditions, or abandonment. Rescued animals are given a second chance at life at BARC Animal Welfare’s kennels, where they receive care, rehabilitation, and the opportunity to be rehomed. BARC Animal Welfare also offers affordable veterinary services, including pet sterilisation, dipping, parasite control, and wound care, all aimed at improving animal health and preventing suffering in local communities. As a community-driven organisation, BARC Animal Welfare relies heavily on donations, volunteer support, and income generated through its charity shop, which sells quality second-hand clothing, bedding, books, homeware and bric-a-brac. Regular fundraising initiatives play a key role in maintaining BARC Animal Welfare’s operations and financial stability.

Adoption & Foster Care

Adoption & Foster Care

BARC Animal Welfare believes every animal deserves a safe and loving home. Whether it’s a lifelong match through adoption or a temporary stop on the road to recovery through fostering, each placement helps change an animal’s life for the better.

Adoption

Adoption fees help cover sterilisation, vaccinations, and basic care, ensuring the best start for each adopted animal.

Fostering

Foster homes provide temporary care for animals who may be too young, recovering from trauma, or in need of socialisation. It’s ideal for people who aren’t ready for a long-term commitment but still want to make a meaningful difference.

How to Adopt or Foster an Animal from BARC

Contact BARC Animal Welfare to learn more about available animals, the process, and how to open your home (and heart) to a furry friend in need.

Other Ways to Help

If adoption or foster care isn’t an option, even volunteering for an hour a week at the kennels will make a difference.

BARC Animal Welfare has a charity shop that plays a vital role in raising funds to support rescued, abandoned, and vulnerable animals in the local community. Donations - Important Notic

Good quality clothing, household items, books, and bric-a-brac are always appreciated. However, due to limited space and resources, the shop is unable to accept items that are damaged, broken, or unsellable.

As a simple guideline: if it’s clean, in working order, and something you would be happy to buy, it’s perfect for donation.

By choosing to give thoughtfully, donors help BARC continue its work with dignity, care, and compassion.

“BARC Animal Welfare does something good for those who will never be able to repay them. These people are true heroes.”  Eloise Wallis
“I will be forever grateful to the incredible team at BARC Animal Welfare. In one of the most difficult moments of my life, they were there, ready to help without hesitation, and with deep compassion. From the way they respond in emergencies to the gentle care they provide afterwards, their love for animals shines through in everything they do. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of adopting two beautiful souls from them (Leon, a cat with the sweetest personality, and Luna, a bright and loyal Belgian Malinois who has brought so much joy into our lives). Both are thriving, and it’s a true testament to the love and attention they received at BARC.”BARC Animal Welfare is an organisation that goes above and beyond, not only in rescue and rehoming, but also in the way they treat each animal. Thank you for everything you do, and for the difference you make every single day.”  Chanya Du Plessis
“The Gansbaai community is so appreciative to be gifted with this wonderful initiative for animal welfare. The facility is clean and run by people who noticeably love animals. I pray that the public will continue to donate generously so that this facility can be upgraded and continue to operate.”  Pieter Hoekstra
“Nols and his team at BARC Animal Welfare are very caring.”  Gert Visser
“BARC Animal Welfare has friendly and helpful staff. They made our puppy adoption process very easy.”  Delvina Spaltman
“We adopted a dog from BARC Animal Welfare. They treated this dog with so much love and compassion. He immediately fitted in with our family.”  Lehane Oosthuizen
“BARC Animal Welfare is a clean and well-maintained animal welfare facility. The manager and his wife do a great job caring for their animals. All holding pens are exceptionally clean with sheltered sleeping areas. There are daily dog walkers. I adopted a very young Border Collie who had been beautifully groomed, bathed, dewormed and vaccinated.”  Angora van Doorn
