My Teaching
MAKING MUSIC, whether singing, drumming, playing an instrument or simply jamming, is vital. It is a positive, forming and healing experience that makes us more human, more alive, more aware of ourselves and the world around us.
CREATING MUSIC, being able to use our imagination, improvise, compose and express ourselves each in our own unique way, is also a vital part of making music!
Thus it is my passion to:
THE KINGDOM of MUSIC PIANO COURSE FOR BEGINNERS
Firstly, I teach piano. Over the last 24 years, working with these principles and being guided by the needs of learners, have resulted in THE KINGDOM of MUSIC PIANO COURSE FOR BEGINNERS.
Piano tuition for beginners should ideally incorporate comprehensive musicianship, engage learners imaginatively and develop their creative competency.
A story is used as the determining idea and framework for this course. The story leads learners into a holistic, integrated, imaginary world where every place, character and happening have a clear and specific music meaning. Through their active involvement in the story unfolding within this world, learners master aural awareness, music literacy, piano technique and creative work. Colour, pictures, drawing, movement, gesture, verse and singing, accompany and engage them on their journey. It is a coherent world where learners feel safe, which they carry within themselves and to which they can always return to refresh their memories!
The teaching material opens possibilities and lays the foundation for creative music making which learners can apply throughout their music career.
I had the privilage to take piano lessons with Mariëtte for the whole of 2018. As a 42 year old grown-up, I obviously had other needs than the children she normally teaches. This did not deter Mariëtte. She did an excellent job in introducing me to the basics of the piano and I can now confidently sit down in front of my friends and play some creative background music. Thank you so much Mariëtte!

My daughter has been learning the piano with Mariëtte for the past 2 years and has loved it. Mariëtte is a kind and patient teacher and her methodology and approach to the piano is inspiring. Her students learn right from the start to embrace the piano as a whole musical entity rather than learning a few notes at a time. Mariëtte taps into her students' imaginations and then helps and guides them in translating their creative ideas into music. My daughter’s progress was unbelievable and her ability and desire to compose her own music was magic. Never have I had to remind her to practice (as was previously the case) as whenever there is a spare moment she is to be found seated at the piano and I have Mariëtte to wholeheartedly thank for that. Creating Music should be the standard approach to music in all schools – it just makes sense!

The highest praise goes to Mariette Richter for her outstanding music classes. She skilfully combines music theory, technical exercises and creative music in each and every class, to the best of fun.
My children will not exchange their weekly piano lesson for anything. Every time they do practice in the house, the rooms are filled with music - even technical exercises are musically grounded and founded and it therefore is a pleasure to listen to. Music pieces are played not only with accurate technique and rhythm, but also with musical expression to its best.

Hiermee verklaar ondergetekende dat Maria Johanna Cornelia Beyers Richter (Mariëtte) vir die afgelope 2 jaar (2019 - 2020) voltyds by Westcoast Music Academy ® Pty Ltd klas gegee het. Haar pligte het o.a. behels Klavier, Gehoor & Teorie onderrig vanaf voorskool tot Sertifkaat vlak van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch; asook Koorafrigting vir Laerskool. Mariette het groot sukses behaal met die onderrig en implimentering van haar eie innoverende Kingdom of Music Piano Music for Beginners en het groot aanhang en waardering ontvang daarvoor. Mariëtte het haar werk met groot ywer en entoesiasme aangepak en puik resultate behaal. Haar studente se kreatiwiteit was in besonder gestimuleer, sy is baie gesteld op korrekte tegniek; asook ‘n goeie basis vir Gehoor en Teoretiese onderrig van jongs af, wat gekombineer was in haar onderrig metodes. Eisteddfod en eksamen afrigting was gedetaileerd gedoen en het besonder goeie uitslae besorg. Sy is ‘n stil innemende persoon wat maklik in mense se harte kruip en haar studente en hul ouers was baie lief vir haar. Sy het daarin geslaag om binne hierdie kort tydperk ‘n magdom tegnologiese uitdagings te bemeester, insluitend notasie sagteware en het nie een oomblik gehuiwer om terug te staan vir die jonger geslag nie. Sy het ook baie goed reggekom met haar mede personeellede, was te alle tye
opbouende geselskap, ‘n staatmaker en sy het alle sperdatums met presiesheid nagekom. Mariette is ‘n toegewyde en uiters betroubare werknemer. Ek kan hierdie voortreflike dame beslis aanbeveel vir enige betrekking waarvoor sy mag kwalifiseer en aansoek doen. Sy sal baie beslis ‘n aanwins weens vir enige werkkring.My beste wense vergesel haar.
