21 September 2024: International Coastal Clea...
International Coastal Cleanup Day is a global movement that began over 30 years ago by the Ocean Conservancy.
The Dyer Island Conservation Trust team together with CapeNature are hard at work rescuing orphaned penguins on Dyer Island.
Dyer Island, just off Gansbaai’s coastline, has been devastated by an outbreak of Avian influenza (bird flu). Over 13,000 birds have died on the island since the outbreak started. Now the African penguin population is being severely impacted. Home to 1,000+ breeding pairs, many of the deceased adult birds have left chicks that are too young and defenceless to fend for themselves.
The African Seabird Sanctuary is working around the clock to deal with the large influx of orphaned African penguin chicks. Without your help, Dyer Island Conservation Trust and CapeNature won’t be able to save the increasing amounts of chicks orphaned by Avian influenza because the rehabilitation costs have risen due to extra quarantine requirements and additional precautions.
Your donation will go a long way to contribute to the hard work that is being done to save the African penguin (South African, UK and USA donors can receive tax benefits for their contribution).
