A number of dogs have recently been retired having served the nation and their handlers with distinction.
The Unit Commander of the Cape Town Dog Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Myers is making an urgent appeal to the public to donate suitable German Shepherd (Alsatian), Malinois, Rottweilers Jack Russells, Labradors and Border Collies between the ages of ten months to two years.
The dogs, upon being accepted are issued to those members of the Service who have undergone a stringent selection process prior to the four month training course thereby ensuring that the dogs donated receive the care and attention that they deserve as four legged colleagues of the service.
Dogs play an essential role in securing the safety and security of the population and are used in various roles, such as apprehending criminals, search and rescue, explosive detection and narcotic detection to name but a few of the roles.
