Francois Stevens, NSRI Gordons Bay deputy station commander, said: "At 09h27 (Saturday, 14th December) NSRI Gordons Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of 2 people swept out to sea in the vicinity of the Hangklip hotel, Pringle Bay. Our NSRI Gordons Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft JACK RILEY and SPIRIT OF SURFSKI and the WC Government Health EMS rescue squad and ambulance and the SA Police Services responded. A Police Dive Unit were placed on alert. On arrival on-scene it was confirmed that a young man, from Mitchells Plain, had alerted bystanders at 09h02 to get assistance to raise the alarm after his father and his grandfather, also both from Mitchells Plain, were swept out to sea while crayfishing in shallow surf in amongst rocks. It appears that the two men were caught in rip currents and were swept off their feet and then swept out to sea. We recovered the bodies of both men, onto our sea rescue craft, approximately 400 meters off-shore and paramedics have declared both men deceased on the scene. Police have opened an inquest docket and are assisting the family." Emergency Services have expressed sincere condolences to the family.
