Hikers on the hike! This can only be an exciting experience! (Picture: Anita Botha)
Oh what a difference some good weather makes! Last Saturday saw 38 very excited walkers gather at the Gansbaai Tourism Office to join our hike from B’bos to Wolwengat on 3rd August. The start of our hike was at the Wolwengat intersection on the road from Pearly Beach to B’bos. Due to the large attendance we needed to utilise 8 vehicles to transport everyone to the start. Thanks to all those who volunteered their cars. The weather at the start was quite cool, so jackets and hats were quickly produced from our backpacks. After our usual introductions, we had visitors from Onrus, we set off. The route followed the gravel road all the way so we were able to relax and walk in small groups rather than our usual single file formation. It’s quite surprising what you can learn on a walk like this. In a small community like Gansbaai everyone knows someone that you know. After a short time the weather soon warmed up and coats were dispatched back into our backpacks. Lunch was taken at the Agulhas Park “farm” station and then we proceeded on to Wolwengat. I would like to know about this isolated little community. Does anyone know the history? I’m sure that the Courant would consider publishing an article! It was a long walk for some, particularly for those who have not been active over the Winter months. Keep it up your fitness levels will soon recover. One walker completed the hike wearing his old army boots which the owner assured me walked a 1000kms a week up on the “border” in the 1980’s. So it couldn’t have been the boots which made his feet sore!
The next hike will be Saturday 07 September 2013 above Voëlklip, Hermanus. The leader is John Burgoyne and he can be contacted at 082-566-4495.
