Tips and Tricks

Oil is the lifeblood of your car, and it keeps your engine running smoothly while protecting it from damaging. Changing your oil sporadically is one of easiest and cheapest ways of maintaining your engines health and longevity. Use Shell’s own Shell Helix brand of oil to prevent corrosion, maintain engine performance and extract those extra few kilometres on the road, and on the ocean. Here are five signs that you need to change your oil.

Five signs you need to change your engine oil

  1. The oil is dark and gritty. The original colour of motor oil is more of a honey brown colour but will change to black after a few weeks. Once you start to see particles in the oil, it needs to be changed.
  2. Your engine sounds louder. Oil lubricates your engine, once you start to hear unpleasant noises that means your engine oil is not working optimally.
  3. Your check engine light won’t go away. On older cars your check engine light in linked to your oil levels. Check your oil levels and judge if it needs replacing or not.
  4. Oil levels drop. Engines gradually eat up engine oil when it’s been in use for a while. When measuring the oil level check the consistency as well. It may be time for an oil change.
  5. You can’t remember when last you changed your oil. If you can't remember when last you changed your oil, change your oil now.
