A huge total of abalone was found abandoned in Napier. On Thursday October, 10 SAPS members from Napier police station received information from the public of poachers, transporting abalone. Around 15:00 the SAPS members received another call from Marine Coastal Management about a BMW that is on the Baardskeerdersbos / Elim Road, transporting abalone. The SAPS members later spotted the identified BMW, but the vehicle got away.

The members then went to the spot where they last saw the BMW coming from, along the road. When they noticed the fresh tyre marks in a secluded path, they followed the marks until they saw shoe laces hanging in a tree. On further investigation they found plastic bags filled with 4,140 abalone with an unknown street value at this stage. The abalone was booked in at the SAPS Napier as abandoned, as no suspects were arrested. The investigation into this case will still continue.
