Grootbos Garden Lodge Wins Nature Reserve Hot...
Garden Lodge has been honoured as the "Nature Reserve Hotel of the Year" at the 2024 Luxe Travel Awards.
Where the icy cold, nutrient-rich water of the Atlantic Ocean is upwelled into the Benguela Current, it converges with the warm Indian Ocean water of the Agulhas Current creating a mecca for marine diversity. Just a stone's throw from this is the Walker Bay and Dyer Island marine reserves, known as the “Serengeti of the Sea''.
With the 2022 whale and shark season currently underway, we have started to see the return of the Southern Right Whales to Walker Bay as well as a massive influx of sharks to the area.
According to our marine partners at Dyer Island Cruises (DIC), it appears that this year is due to be one of the all-time greatest for marine sightings in recent times. Lately, while on marine safaris, the DIC team has encountered different shark species congregating around the seal colony. May's seal pupping has resulted in inquisitive pups exploring the waters around the colony, making easy meals for hungry sharks.
Humpback whales have been lingering a bit longer in this area as they usually would have continued on their travels up to Mozambique by this time. Our “tons-of-fun” visitors from Antarctica, the Southern Right Whales, have also started to join us in these comparatively warmer waters. With so many early arrivals, we can expect an incredible whale season this year.
At Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, guests can witness and experience this incredible marine adventure like never before. We offer guided coastal safaris and a chance for intimate encounters in this aqua wonderland.
Together with Dyer Island Cruises which share the same dedication to service excellence, conservation and education, we will take you on eco-friendly tours led by experienced marine biologists and guides.
