Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s Fishing Line Recovery and Recycling Programme use PVC pipes to create receptacles that are placed at beaches around the country to collect used, discarded fishing lines.
Pearly2Point Running Challenge wants to shine awareness on the programme, which since its inception in 2010, has expanded from Gansbaai to coastal points countrywide and has been met with overwhelming support by local communities.
The Dyer Island Conservation Trust assembles and distributes the bins through a partnership with the Marine Dynamics International Marine Volunteer Programme. The material for the bins is sponsored by MacNeil as arranged by Plastics SA.
The GPS position of each bin is entered into a database to allow for the creation of a map to indicate where fishing line bins are available. Information is also included regarding which organisation is responsible for the maintenance and emptying of each bin.
The 85km Pearly2Point Running Challenge starts at the Dyer Island Conservation Trust offices in Kleinbaai and ends at Castle Beach at the southernmost tip of Africa in LÁgulas.
