“Once upon a time, early one morning to be precise, Johann van der Merwe was innocently minding his own business while enjoying a relaxed stroll out in the country. Without warning, and much to his alarm, he was charged by a very angry goose. This temperamental bird had a reputation for being territorial and would take great pleasure in terrorising Johann, and other passers-by, each time they ventured out for a walk. The goose especially enjoyed chasing Johann and waited for him each day.
To calm his nerves, Johann would unwind in coffee shops with an ice-cold beer and a big slice of cake, while he contemplated life. He enjoyed the aroma, vibe and warmth of the coffee scene as well as the safe feeling he felt being able to escape the goose when he was there. Very quickly he developed a deep love for the taste of coffee and replaced the beer with that.
Time went by and Johann’s route eventually led him to India where he learned many wonderful things. He spent time working as a barista in a coffee shop and it was here that his love for coffee grew. On his return to South Africa, he set about becoming a coffee roaster because coffee had now become his passion.
Johann never forgot the raging goose and the coffee path it had chased him onto. When he eventually settled in Gansbaai, it made sense to name his business after the fearless fowl.”
