Grootbos Hike with Strandveld Hiking Club
We had a lovely hike this past Saturday on the Grootbos Foundation property, close to the Grootbos Eco Centre.
Strandveld Hiking Club Takes on Tesselaarsdal!
Our latest hike took us into the stunning mountains of Tesselaarsdal on a very hot day, with temperatures soaring into the low forties. Despite the heat, our adventurous group embarked on a trail led by the knowledgeable Jenny Hayes, a local resident and entrepreneur. Jenny has collaborated with local farmers to open this trail, shining a spotlight on the beauty of the area.
The route began on the outskirts of Tesselaarsdal and led us up the majestic Spitskop Mountain. Along the way, we encountered challenges, including the increasing spread of invasive Hakea species in the upper mountain, a reminder of the importance of conservation. Thankfully, the vibrant fynbos remains breathtaking, with Leucospermum Cordifolium still in bloom and busy beetles pollinating the delicate Brunias in the pervasive heat.
Our breakfast break offered breathtaking views of the Akkedisberg Pass, a perfect reward for the climb. However, due to the intense heat, we opted to shorten the return route to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety.
Afterward, several hikers cooled off with milkshakes and burgers at De Poskantoor, a much-welcomed treat to end the day. Despite the heat, the consensus was unanimous: the hike was a memorable success!
