Eat - Sleep - Relax - Enjoy

Whalesong Lodge is located on the rocky cliffs of De Kelders in the Cape Whale Coast. Guests can enjoy spectacular views of Walker Bay and the surrounding mountain ranges while indulging in what is undoubtedly one of the best landscapes on earth. The Lodge is the ideal place to relax, unwind and connect with nature - making things like television an unnecessary commodity. Between the months of June and December the bay is frequented by Southern Right Whales which spend lazy days nursing their young and froliking within meters of the shore, making this tranquil lodge the perfect land-based whale watching spot. The owners of Whalesong Lodge pride themselves on the special attention they pay to the finer details needed to ensure that theirs is an environmentally friendly guesthouse. This petit lodge has an intimate feel and can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests.

Stanley and Lainy Carpenter have always had a passion for hospitality and after selling their shares in Pontac Manor Hotel, the couple moved from Paarl to Gansbaai. The house in Cliff Street immediately caught their eye and has evolved into a tranquil haven for those guests wanting a peaceful breakaway. The couple have been hosting guests since 2003 and strive to share their knowledge on the abundance of blessings that the Overberg has become known for. The lodge is north-facing which means that you are protected from the strong southerly winds which visit the Cape Whale Coast in summer.

At Whalesong Lodge, a big focus is placed on minimizing environmental impacts and empowering the local community. The Lodge has solar power, a grey water system, LED lights and uses only eco-friendly cleaning products. When it comes to food - sourcing local and wholesome nutrition is the guideline upheld throughout. The Lodge is Fair Trade accredited and actively invests in training local staff. ‘Awakening, consciousness and awareness’ are words used by the Carpenters to synthesize their philosophy.

There are four standard rooms all with partial sea view. The modern, functional en-suite bathrooms are separated from the sleeping area by shoulder-high pony walls.

The room has a writing desk and two occasional chairs. The modern, open-plan bathroom is separated from the sleeping area by shoulder-high pony walls.

The suite's private balcony has a coffee table and two chairs.

  • Breakfast is included in the price and you will be spoiled for choice with a feast of flavours such as homemade yoghurt and muesli, eggs supplied by free roaming chickens from the Carpenter’s second venture, Lokal, as well as other delicious breakfast treats made from produce supplied by farmers in the area.

  • Filtered water and seasonal fruit.
  • A laundry service is available.
  • Underfloor heating to help you get cosy during the chilly winter months.

To ensure your stay at Whalesong Lodge is a memorable one, Stanley and Lainy will organise your excursions for you so that you don’t have to. The area has so much to offer and you can enjoy guided fynbos hikes, cage-diving with Great White Sharks and horse riding on secluded beaches. If serious relaxation is at the top of your bucket list then you can ease into the sights and sounds of the area.

Whales, whales and more whales for the ultimate land-based whale watching experience on earth in season. Explore the cliff paths and caves in the area during the months of June - December which are known for the high concentration of Southern Right Whales that use Walker Bay as a nursery. Guests staying at Whalesong Lodge have front row seats for this memorable event.

Spend lazy days relaxing at one of the safe swimming beaches and coves nearby or tour the internationally acclaimed wine farms that dot the hills and valleys of the Cape Whale Coast.
